“I am a human being, just as much as you are”.
The personal becomes the political in Frank McGuinness’ adaptation of A Doll’s House. Originally premiering in 1879, Henrik Ibsen’s play follows the life of Nora Helmer, a Norwegian housewife who grows disillusioned with the role she plays in the nuclear family dynamic after her husband Torvald discovers the big secret she has kept from him. The final stage direction, of a door slamming behind her — is one of the most acclaimed ever written in the world of theatre.
This year, we see Golden-Globe winning Jessica Chastain, a Hollywood actress who starred in Christopher Nolan’s Interstellar, as well as the movie adaptation of Stephen King’s IT — making her West End debut as Nora in this profound production by director Jamie Lloyd.
Although the original play is set in a Norwegian town in 1879, the themes of brutal honesty in relationships, appearance versus reality and the yearning to find one’s true self are universal; though experienced uniquely. It means the story is easily transplanted into any age, and with director Jamie Lloyd known for “redefining West End theatre” — this is one show you won’t want to miss.
In fact, you won’t be surprised to learn that the original story was loosely based on a close friend of playwright Henrik Ibsen’s, whose life and marriage mirrored the ebb and flow of Nora and her husband. In this immaculate production, art imitates life.
A Doll’s House marks its stunning examination of personhood and familial bonds at London’s Playhouse Theatre from June to September of 2020. Most suitable for ages 11+, find and book your tickets today for this year’s most unmissable production.
