Over the years Sally Cookson has presented an array of stand-out family shows in the capital and she will repeat this feat in 2018 as she heads to the Old Vic Theatre with this stage version of the acclaimed novel A Monster Calls. An impressive cast and creative team combine to create a wonderful and memorable piece of theatre on one of the capital’s most prestigious stages and it is sure to be one of the more talked-about productions of 2018.
And this is despite a year that brings some top shows to the West End, in addition to the various other productions opening at the Old Vic such as Fanny & Alexander and Mood Music, amongst others. So it is shaping up to be a good season for London theatregoers.
With A Monster Calls, however, they will be treated to an emotional and eye-opening journey that deals with loss and acceptance as we focus on the character of Conor, a young teenager living with his terminally ill mother. He is finding it difficult to deal with the issue on his own and he finds help in the most unlikely of places – from a monster that visits him in the middle of the night.
Patrick Ness’s novel is a firm favourite of audiences all over the world and Sally Cookson is the perfect choice to direct. She comes to the Old Vic Theatre with the production having previously helmed family shows like Stick Man at the Leicester Square Theatre, We’re Going On A Bear Hunt at the Lyric Theatre and Hetty Feather at the Duke of York’s Theatre, amongst others.
So A Monster Calls is definitely a must-see when it opens at London’s Old Vic Theatre on Saturday 7th July 2018.
