2016 has its fair share of high profile musicals, from Aladdin at the Prince Edward Theatre to the return of Showboat at the New London Theatre. However, 2017 is also shaping up to be a impressive year as a high profile musical is headed to the Dominion Theatre– one with critical acclaim following it across the Atlantic.
An American In Paris was seen on Broadway last year, earning plenty of Tony Awards and winning over both audiences and critics in the process. Now it comes to the West End where London theatregoers will get a chance to see what the fuss is all about.
The story and music comes from the 1951 film of the same name, which utilises music from Gershwin and transports audiences to post-war Paris. There we meet Jerry Mulligan, a man who saw his fair share of horrors in the conflict and now finds himself in the city of love in the late 1940s, where friendship and romance are both on the cards as he embarks on a life as a painter.
Musical numbers that form the soundtrack include I Got Rhythm, I’ll Build A Stairway and I’ve Got Beginners Luck, amongst others. The show also features choreography that won a Tony Award when it was seen in the United States, so all of this adds up to something truly special for London in 2017.
The original film starred Gene Kelly in the role of Jerry Mulligan and was well known for the dance routines and won the Academy Award for Best Picture in 1952. So it had a large audience even before the new musical was premiered, but its reputation can soar once again as a new generation of audiences witness this unforgettable story.
But whilst 50s audiences turned to Gene Kelly for the performance of Mulligan, West End crowds will turn to Robert Fairchild, who makes his way across the Atlantic to reprise his role from Broadway. Considering he earned a Tony Award nomination for his work in the production, this will be another big reason to see the show when it opens in 2017. The production will also star Leanne Cope.
An American In Paris is at the Dominion Theatre from Saturday 1st April 2017 (with previews from Saturday 4th March 2017).
