The Classic Spring Theatre Company presents an array of stand-out productions in 2018 as part of its Oscar Wilde season. Amongst them is An Ideal Husband, Wilde’s political comedy that is up there with his most cherished work.
The Irish playwright penned the piece in the late 19th century and the staging in 2018 is the latest in a long line of stand-out performances since its 1895 debut. But then, like many of Wilde’s plays, it features an array of memorable characters that ensure it stays in the minds of audiences long after the last curtain call, from Sir Robert Chiltern to Viscount Goring and from Vicomte de Najac to Mrs Cheveley.
Sir Robert Chiltern is the focus of An Ideal Husband. He is a government minister based in London, who seems to have the world on his shoulders, with more fortune ahead of him. However, his future is not going to go the way he wants as a Mrs Cheveley arrives on the scene and she has brought some damning proof of previous misdeeds that will bring his world crashing down.
One of the most renowned comedies delves into political scandals and the corruption of power, bringing to the stage something that will resonate with modern audiences just as much as its contemporary crowds in the 1890s.
As part of a season that also includes Lady Windermere’s Fan and The Importance Of Being Earnest, An Ideal Husband runs at the Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End from Thursday 3rd May 2018 (previews from Tuesday 10th April 2018).
