It is once again time to revisit the work of J. B. Priestley as his most famous play An Inspector Calls makes a welcome return to the West End. With its mysterious setup and a premise that isn’t quite what it seems, it has been enthralling audiences since the 1940s and found new popularity in the 1990s. So today, in 2016, it remains a crowd favourite and one that will have them flocking to the Playhouse Theatre from November.

We meet the Birling Family in An Inspector Calls as they gather for a dinner party in their home. They have an enjoyable evening planned but all of this comes crashing down with the arrival of a new guest – Inspector Goole. He has news that will upset everything as he reveals that a girl has committed suicide and every member of the household made their mark on her life by exploiting her in some way. Goole is investigating the case and hopes to get to the bottom of it – but is everything as it first appears?

J. B. Priestley penned many acclaimed works during his career, including numerous productions that formed part of his ‘time plays’ such as Time And The Conways. An Inspector Calls was first seen by London eyes in 1946 and whilst it was a positively-received show it gained more life in the 1990s when Stephen Daldry staged it in the West End. This is the production that returns in 2016 and it is bound to attract a great deal of attention, particularly from those who have hoped to see Daldry’s version for some time.

After all, Stephen Daldry is one of the biggest names in London theatre, having directed a great deal of well-received shows. He directed both the film and the stage version of Billy Elliot The Musical, as well as The Audience with Helen Mirren (and later Kristen Scott Thomas) as the Queen at the Apollo and Gielgud Theatres. He has earned numerous awards and nominations, including two Laurence Olivier Awards.

An Inspector Calls makes its welcome return to the West End when it runs at the Playhouse Theatre from Thursday 10th November 2016 (previews from Friday 4th November 2016).
