Continuing beyond its critically-acclaimed season at The Donmar Warehouse, the sensational City of Angels is making its way to London’s Garrick Theatre — with a West End production that is sure to be the boldest revival to hit the spotlight.
The story unfolds when New York novelist Stine, is presented with the opportunity to adapt his books into a film fit for Hollywood’s silver screen. He then uproots his life and moves to the land of palm trees and dreams, but all is not what it seems. The multiple award-winning musical weaves together two simultaneous plots, effortlessly moving between the real world 24-7 electric technicolor world of Hollywood that Stine inhabits, and the world of Stine’s fictional 1940s film-noir glitterati.
Yet beyond the smoke and mirrors of californication, Stine finds the all-consuming lure of fame, allure of women and questionable artistic direction, all too real for those hoping to make it big in Hollywood.
Full of wit, glitz and glamour — City of Angels captures the essence of film-noir with its stunning jazz score featuring the popular songs “I’m Nothing Without You” and “You Can Always Count On Me”. This show has won a sensational six Tony Awards and three Olivier Awards, including “Best Musical Revival”.
Hadley Fraser takes the role of protagonist Stine, and his previous West End credits include Young Frankenstein and Les Miserables. You might remember former Girls Aloud singer Nicola Roberts, who will make her West End debut alongside hollywood actress Vanessa Williams — famous for her roles in Desperate Housewives and Ugly Betty. Williams is no stranger to theatre, having previously won an award for her performance on Broadway as The Witch in Into The Woods. And if you’re wondering about the creative team behind the production, you’ll be excited to learn that City of Angels will once again be under the artistic direction of Josie Rourke.
