When it comes to the West End, shows have to pull out all of the stops to stand out in a large and vibrant market place. This will be no problem for the latest show headed to the Wyndham’s Theatre as it combines a stellar cast with an updated story that was already centuries-old by the time it emerged a decade ago.

Don Juan In Soho will star David Tennant in the title role as he is directed by the show’s writer Patrick Marber in the West End. Famous around the world for his work in the hit series Doctor Who and Broadchurch, he returns to a West End stage, which has welcomed him time and time again in numerous Shakespearean works and more.

For Don Juan In Soho he inhabits the role of Moliere’s famous libertine as the iconic character is brought to modern day Soho in London. But whilst the setting and time period is different, Don Juan is the same lethario as ever and we will witness as his cut-throat nature settles through, with betrayal and nastiness the name of the game as he seeks maximum indulgence.

Tennant follows in the footsteps of a myriad of performers who have played the role over the centuries. From Johnny Depp in the big screen’s Don Juan DeMarco to the more recent Joseph Gordon-Levitt in Don Jon, the character has had a huge effect on popular culture. Then there are the stage versions, with Rhys Ifans playing the role in the Donmar Warehouse’s original production of Don Juan In Soho in 2006, and it shows that there’s life in the character many centuries since the text first appeared in the 17th century.

So Tennant has big shoes to fill, but his experience on the stage and screen make him the perfect choice to bring new life to the part. On the small screen he is known to audiences as the Tenth Doctor in Doctor Who, as Alex Hardy in Broadchurch and as the title role in Casanova, though he has also appeared in films like Fright Night and What We Did On Our Holiday.

But ever since he first emerged in the 1990s he has always had a special place on the stage, previously appearing at the Wyndham’s Theatre in Much Ado About Nothing in 2011, as well as performing in other Shakespearean productions around the capital.

So his work as the eponymous Don Juan should not be missed when Don Juan In Soho runs at the Wyndham’s Theatre from Tuesday 28th March 2017 (previews from Friday 17th March 2017).
