Over a decade since it was last seen in the capital, Bryony Lavery’s acclaimed play Frozen makes a welcome return to the stage. Suranne Jones and Jason Watkins star under the direction of Jonathan Munby when the production runs at the Theatre Royal Haymarket and judging by the response when it last played in London, audiences are in for a powerful and compelling time at the theatre.
The show deals with the varying perspectives of kidnapping, with events portrayed from different angles of a particularly harrowing event. It provides both a heartbreaking and thought-provoking narrative that has captured the attentions of audiences since the show was first presented in the late 1990s.
Those three perspectives are vastly different ones – Nancy is the mother of a little girl called Rhona, who has been kidnapped, whilst Ralph is a murderer. Meanwhile, Agnetha is a psychiatrist who also struggles to make sense of matters from the other side of the Atlantic.
It is a tale of the unthinkable and unfathomable and across these three viewpoints we will explore something that few could come to terms with. It is a powerful and compelling show that has had a profound effect since it was first staged in Birmingham back in the late 1990s.
And with that in mind it falls upon some talented performers to do the work justice. On this occasion it is Suranne Jones and Jason Watkins, both of whom will be instantly recognisable to audiences for appearances on the screen, in addition to previous stage work. Jones will be recognisable from the likes of Doctor Foster, Coronation Street, Scott & Bailey and Doctor Who alongside Beautiful Things at the Arts Theatre in 2013 and A Few Good Men at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.
So it is safe to say that she will provide a familiar face when she steps onto the stage of the Theatre Royal Haymarket once again at the beginning of 2018.
As such it is easy to see why this is such a welcome return for a production that has captured the attentions of audiences since it was first seen 20 years ago. Frozen runs at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in London’s West End from Friday 9th February 2018.
