Cameron Mackintosh is a name that carries a lot of weight in the West End and with that in mind any show heading to the capital is going to cause a stir. In 2016, however, he is bringing a tried and tested hit as he transfers the Chichester Festival Theatre success story Half A Sixpence to Theatreland, with its original cast along for the ride, and audiences are bound to take notice.
In a year that has already welcomed some high profile shows, from Aladdin at the Prince Edward Theatre to School Of Rock at the New London Theatre, Half A Sixpence is another welcome addition to Theatreland.
The Noël Coward Theatre hosts the production, with Charlie Stemp and Devon-Elise Johnson playing the lead roles of Arthur Kipps and Anna Pornick, whilst Rachel Kavanaugh directs. As the latest in a long line of transfers from the Chichester Festival Theatre audiences will already know that they are in safe hands and this should make it one of the big musical hits of recent years.
Kipps, the character at the centre of the show, is granted a huge change to his lifestyle in Half A Sixpence, a change that will offer some big decisions to be made and also propel him into a love triangle that transcends social status.
At the beginning of the show he is an orphan in a draining job but an inheritance provides a huge windfall and with it the character of Helen Walsingham who provides him with his new look. But with Anna Pornick, from his old life, also vying for his attention he may soon have to make a big choice as the ups and downs of living rich and poor lives take hold.
The comic musical was originally staged back in 1963 and also made it to Broadway later in the decade. Based on the H. G. Wells novel, which itself was semi-autobiographical and a world removed from his sci-fi work, the story proved to be a big success.
And this is true for this new version from Cameron Mackintosh as well, with Charlie Stemp gaining great praise at the Chichester Festival Theatre and West End audiences clearly in for a treat when he comes to London. In addition to appearing in the production at Chichester he has also appeared in a touring version of Mamma Mia! and in Wicked at the Apollo Victoria Theatre, but this will undoubtedly be his big break!
The cast also includes Emma Willians and Ian Bartholomew.
Half A Sixpence runs at the Noël Coward Theatre from Thursday 17th November 2016 (with previews from Saturday 29th October 2016).
