The Harold Pinter Theatre is itself a celebration of one of Britain’s greatest dramatists, its name reminding audiences every day that he penned some of the 20th century’s favourite work. But now it will be going a step further as it welcomes the Jamie Lloyd Company for The Pinter At The Pinter Season, which honours the late playwright’s work a decade after his death in 2008. Jamie Lloyd and others direct some big-name performers in a series of Pinters’ one-act plays as part of double, triple and quadruple bills.
This double bill in particular features both Party Time and Celebration, with direction from Lloyd and a cast that includes Celia Imrie, John Simm, Tracy-Ann Oberman and Abraham Popoola.
Party Time is, unsurprisingly, set at a party. But this social gathering takes place in a world far away from our own, with the wealthy Gavin throwing the event at his high-end apartment against the backdrop of a tyrannical state oppressing the country, with military vehicles on the streets. It was initially seen by audiences almost thirty years ago in 1991.
Celebration, meanwhile, also takes a look at the richer members of society as we catch up with characters like Lambert & Julie (celebrating their anniversary), another couple in Matt and Prue (celebrating with the former), and another in Russell and Suki, plus high-end restaurant staff. During the course of the play their interactions play out, with dark and existential themes.
Director Jamie Lloyd is best known for the Jamie Lloyd Company’s Trafalgar Transformed Seasons, which showcased some high profile shows such as The Hothouse (also starring John Simm) at the Trafalgar Studios 1. He is one of the highest profile directors working in the West End.
Party Time and Celebration appear as part of The Pinter At The Pinter Season at the Harold Pinter Theatre from Thursday 6th September 2018.
