Stepping Out Photos & Video
From March 2017 the Vaudeville Theatre hands itself over to a show boasting a talented pedigree, with well known performers working under the direction of Maria Friedman, whilst utilising a script penned by Richard Harris back in the 1980s.
Stepping Out, with Amanda Holden and Tamzin Outhwaite amongst the cast members, will be one of the must-see events of the year as Harris’s story of a group of colourful characters returns to the capital. So in a year that also sees the release of shows such as Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? and The Girls it will be the perfect time to revisit old shows and experience the new in the West End.
But Stepping Out has a lot to make it stand-out from the crowd as well, from its stellar cast to director Maria Friedman. The latter’s work on the stage and behind the scenes has made her a sought-after talent for many years, with her directorial debut Merrily We Roll Along at the Menier Chocolate Factory only adding to her esteem.
With Stepping Out she tackles Harris’s story of a group of friends and their ups and downs as part of a dance class in North London. Holden and Outhwaite, as well as further cast members Nicola Stephenson, Tracy-Ann Oberman and Angela Griffin will bring life to these characters. After a dance class is opened by Mavis, characters like Sylvia and Dorothy decide to take part, hoping that it will help them escape some of life’s problems, and it isn’t long before they have their first show. During the course of the story we also learn plenty about the colourful, individual characters.
Friedman has won multiple Laurence Olivier Awards during her career, two for Best Actress in a Musical and another for Best Entertainment, with further nominations for more awards. When seeing her work in person it is easy to see why, with her performances in productions like The Woman In White at the Palace Theatre and Ragtime at the Piccadilly Theatre impressing audiences in the capital. Add to these her own shows like Maria Friedman – By Special Arrangement and her directing debut in Merrily We Roll Along at the Menier Chocolate Factory and you have the making of someone whose work will continue to make a big impression. So expect big things for Stepping Out in 2017.
The production opens at the Vaudeville Theatre on Tuesday 14th March 2017 (previews from Wednesday 1st March 2017).
