2018 is shaping up to be a great time to head to London’s West End, with some exiting shows heading to venues across the capital.
Amongst them is this musical production of a hit 1990s film. This isn’t the first time a major motion picture has made its way to the stage of course, with The Lion King and Kinky Boots being some notable examples, but it will provide a new perspective on a story that launched the career of a major movie director – Baz Lurhmann.
Strictly Ballroom was his breakout hit back in 1992, presenting audiences with everything they needed for a great time in cinemas, and he would go on to direct the likes of Romeo + Juliet and Moulin Rouge!, to name but a few examples of his work.
But it was in 2014 that the next leg in Strictly Ballroom’s journey would begin as the production was reverted to a stage musical, appearing at many venues Down Under and eventually making its way to the West Yorkshire Playhouse in 2016.
And now that production lands at the West End’s Piccadilly Theatre under the direction of Drew McOnie, with London audiences finally able to witness the story of Scott as he makes his way through the world of ballroom dancing.
A renegade, Scott knows how to ruffle feathers and as he attempts to win a major dancing competition and find love he is bound to find himself at odds with those around him, making for a memorable and heartwarming story. This tale is bolstered by some unforgettable musical numbers as well, plucked from the film and taking audiences on a nostalgic journey back to the 1980s and 1990s.
And for this new staging direction and choreography falls upon the enormously talented Drew McOnie, whose work in the capital and beyond has made him one of the most exciting practitioners working in the United Kingdom. It means that Strictly Ballrooms will be one of the unmissable theatre events of the year.
So as it joins a host of other film-turned-musicals like School Of Rock and Aladdin, Strictly Ballroom becomes the must-see show of 2018!
Strictly Ballroom runs at the West End’s Piccadilly Theatre from Wednesday 11th April 2018 (with previews from Friday 16th March 2018).
