Over the years the Harold Pinter Theatre has welcomed some stand-out shows. Since October 2011 when the Comedy Theatre got its new name it has been the home of some of the most talked-about productions starring some big names.

This tradition continues in 2018 as the venue welcomes a show from its namesake, with Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party playing at the venue in the early months of the year. It follows on from late 2017’s Oslo, about the Oslo Peace Accords, and offers a change of pace for the venue as we explore the darkly comic and unexpected events of a boarding house.

That boarding house is run by Meg and Petey Boles and their only guest is Stanley Webber and whilst the lives they lead are slow, they are beyond used to them. So when Stanley’s birthday prompts the titular party there is a big chance for things to go off course, especially when unexpected visitors arrive on the scene.

Meg Boles is set to be portrayed by the acclaimed actress Zoë Wanamaker, well known for a range of television, film and stage roles, whilst Stanley will be played by Toby Jones, equally as renowned across the same fields. Then there is Stephen Mangan, the well known comic actor portraying the character of Goldberg. Together, and along with director Ian Rickson, they will bring life to a story that was first seen in the capital six decades ago.

As Harold Pinter passed away in 2008 and the last staging London took place earlier that year, this is the first time that the production has been seen in the West End since we lost the man himself. But it demonstrates the lasting power of his work, which will continue to find new generations of fans well into the future.

And with a stellar cast of well known West End talent, plus an acclaimed director in Ian Rickson and celebrated source material, this will be an unmissable West End event in early 2018.

Harold Pinter’s The Birthday Party will entertain audiences at the West End’s Harold Pinter Theatre from Thursday 18th January 2018 (with previews beginning on Tuesday 9th January 2018).
