For West End audiences one of the big thrills is seeing some of the best performers in the world live on stage and in 2017 the Theatre Royal Haymarket will meets these needs tenfold as it welcomes Damian Lewis in The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia?
Edward Albee’s 2002 play has been on the receiving end of numerous awards and can stand alongside some of the late writer’s best (others include the classic Who’s Afraid Of Virginia Woolf? which also returns to the West End in 2017) so it doesn’t take much to create excitement for The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia? However, with the casting of Damian Lewis audiences will know they are in for something extra special.
The show, described as darkly comic, focuses on the character of Martin (Lewis), a family man with a wife, Stevie, and a teenage son, Billy, but whose life is turned upside down in an unexpected way. His family is pushed to the limits when he falls for a goat and as the story progresses the audience will also be tested, particularly in regards to their attitudes towards challenging subjects.
It is an interesting tale and as a result it is no wonder it earned a Tony Award in 2002 whilst also emerging as a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. With this in mind it can’t open in the West End soon enough!
After all, in addition to these awards, the presence of Damian Lewis is only going to add to the draw. The acclaimed performer has appeared in a wealth of shows in the nation’s capital and is also a familiar face on the screen, from US television series like Homeland and Band Of Brothers to British shows like Wolf Hall and Have I Got News For You.
His West End theatre credits, meanwhile, include the recent production of David Mamet’s American Buffalo at the Wyndham’s Theatre (which also starred John Goodman) and The Misanthrope at the Comedy Theatre (now known as the Harold Pinter Theatre).
All of this adds up to an unmissable show so make sure you catch The Goat, Or Who Is Sylvia? when it plays at the Theatre Royal Haymarket under the direction of Ian Rickson from Wednesday 5th April 2017 (previews from Friday 24th March 2017).
