2018 sees the Classic Spring Theatre Company continue to celebrate Oscar Wilde by staging some wonderful productions of his iconic plays. But this is not just restricted to older audiences as April brings this unmissable operatic family show to the venue in the form of The Selfish Giant.
Adapted by composer Guy Chambers from Wilde’s short story of the same name, The Selfish Giant introduces us to the eponymous giant as he takes drastic measures to protect his beautiful garden full of peach trees. The story sees the giant return from visiting a friend only to find that children are playing there, so he promptly builds a wall to keep them out. But his selfish action causes the garden to suffer from a perpetual winter, with spring never arriving, and if he wants to save it he might just have to change his attitude.
The Selfish Giant originally appeared in Oscar Wilde’s 1888 short story collection The Happy Prince And Other Tales, which also included the likes of The Nightingale And The Rose, The Devoted Friend and The Remarkable Rocket. So it makes its way to the stage 130 years since audiences first experienced it on the page.
The Selfish Giant, featuring great actors and music, runs at the Vaudeville Theatre from Tuesday 10th April 2018.
