The Menier Chocolate Factory maintains its place as one of the most exciting places outside of the West End as it welcomes this wonderful revival of Barnum, Mark Bramble, Michael Stewart and Cy Coleman’s musical about the legendary showman P. T. Barnum.

An impressive cast has been recruited to work under the direction of Gordon Greenberg as audiences take a step back in time to the late 19th century and witness the world presented by Barnum and his famous circus show.

P. T. Barnum was one of the most influential entertainment figures of the time, creating a circus company that transcended his death in 1891. It has since merged with another to form Ringling Bros. And Barnum & Bailey Circus, which only ceased operating last year. It means that his legacy has thrived across the century, which is demonstrated by this very musical, which premiered in the 1980s.

Barnum focuses on his time travelling across the United States as a showman to rival all others. It features songs like Thank God I’m Old, The Colors Of My Life, Come Follow The Band and Join The Circus, amongst others.

The show itself mixes spectacle with a heartwarming story, making this a show that has an effect on the senses and leaves audiences spellbound. These have combined to make it enormously popular ever since it premiered on Broadway in 1981 (appearing in the West End later in the same year).

Director Gordon Greenberg has previously helmed numerous shows on both sides of the Atlantic, from Guys And Dolls at the Chichester Festival Theatre to Holiday Inn on Broadway, so he brings plenty of experience to what is likely to the theatrical event of the year.

And with Barnum he directs some top names, with Marcus Brigstocke playing Barnum, honing skills he has utilised in shows like Spamalot and on numerous television shows, alongside Laura Pitt-Pulford, Celinde Schoenmaker, Tupele Dorgu and Harry Francis amongst a host of others.

Barnum makes a triumphant return to the capital and entertains audiences at the Menier Chocolate Factory in 2018.
