Blithe Spirit - Duke of Yorks Theatre, London
Age Restriction: To be confirmed.
Where else but London’s West End could you see a classic tale from writer Noël Coward performed by world class performers like Jennifer Saunders in 2020?
From March, the popular comedian and actor heads to the Duke of York’s Theatre to play Madame Arcati in Coward’s iconic comedy Blithe Spirit. Under the direction of the enormously talented Richard Eyre, this is a show that must be seen as it delights audiences during the Spring season. In the process it reminds audiences not only why Jennifer Saunders has enjoyed such a long and successful career, but also why Noël Coward’s work continues to find new fans year after year.
Madame Arcati is the strange medium that invades the life of Charles Condomine in Coward’s hilarious story. Arcati turns his marriage upside down when she conjures up the ghost of Elvira, his deceased wife who is not too happy that he has moved on. This is not the way a séance was supposed to go for Condomine, a writer who merely wanted to hold it to research a new novel.
From its debut in Manchester in the 1940s to countless revivals around the world in the 21st century, Blithe Spirit remains a celebrated play in Noël Coward’s catalogue. Over the years an array of well known performers have played the lead parts, with Margaret Rutheford, Beryl Measor, Penelope Keith and Angela Lansbury amongst those to portray Madame Arcati over the years
It means that Jennifer Saunders has big shoes to fill, but she is bound to do so with ease. After all, she is a performer who has delighted audiences for decades in shows like Absolutely Fabulous and French & Saunders so her appearance in Blithe Spirit is not one for audiences to miss!
Blithe Spirit runs at the Duke of York’s Theatre from Tuesday 10th March 2020 (previews from Thursday 5th March 2020).
