When you cast your minds back to the 1980s there are a range of musicals that might come to mind and many of them have been revived in the West End in recent years.
In 2018, however, it will be the turn of one of the most talked-about shows of the era as the musical from Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus, who have since enjoyed further success with Mamma Mia!, makes its way to the London Coliseum.
That show is Chess and it will revive Cold War tensions on a West End stage in 2018 as we return to a world of high stakes, with a microcosm of world affairs constructed for London theatregoers.
Back in the 1980s the Cold War was still raging and everything seemed to be America versus the Soviet Union, which was reflected in science and technology (through the respective country’s space programmes), popular culture and, of course, through military might. For this stand-out musical, however, the game is Chess and both love and international relations are at stake.
Throughout the show we also hear some memorable musical numbers, which have ensured that Chess remains a firm favourite with audiences around the world in the decades since it was first seen.
But then we would expect no less from Andersson and Ulvaeus, who wowed audiences as part of the pop group ABBA and have also captured the hearts of audiences with the megahit Mamma Mia! The latter, of course, continues at the Novello Theatre in London’s West End, whilst a 2008 film version brought their work to an even larger audience. But with Chess, theatregoers can see how their talents were used in the mid-1980s to great effect.
And it has found a great home in the London Coliseum. The venue is in London’s West End but whilst it is best known as the home of the English National Opera, it has also been presenting some well-received musicals in recent years. Both Carousel and Bat Out Of Hell The Musical appeared at the venue in 2017 and audiences will continue to find solid work as Chess lands in 2018.
Chess runs at the London Coliseum from Thursday 26th April 2018.
