The West End is home to some iconic musicals, whether it is the long running Les Misérables or the acclaimed Matilda The Musical, but now we can add another stand-out showcase to the list – Stephen Sondheim’s Company.
A multi award-winning show, with previous revivals under its belt and some memorable musical numbers, Company is set to return to the capital under the banner of Elliot Harper Productions and with a major gender reversal giving it a fresh perspective 50 years after its premiere. It makes it one of the capital’s many must-see shows.
But that’s not the only thing this fantastic new production has going for it. The show is set to star both Patti LuPone and Rosalie Craig as well, with the latter taking on the lead role of Bobbi and Broadway icon LuPone playing Joanne. It means that what was already a must-see show is now one of the theatrical events of the year as two instantly recognisable faces take to the stage and prove why they are so highly regarded on these shores.
Company is told as a series of vignettes across its runtime and the focus is on a woman called Bobbi (originally the male Bobby back in 1970 and subsequent revivals), who is single and commitment-phobic. The vignettes show her relationships with numerous married couples and friends, whilst songs play such as The Little Things You Do Together, Getting Married Today, The Ladies Who Lunch, Someone Is Waiting and Side By Side By Side, amongst various others.
First staged in 1970 on Broadway, Company has since enjoyed a West End appearance at Her Majesty’s Theatre in 1972 and a revival at the Donmar Warehouse and Albery Theatre (now the Noël Coward Theatre) in 1995. It has also enjoyed Broadway revivals and awards success, demonstrating its long-lasting and enduring appeal.
This production, however, is the brainchild of Marianna Elliot and Chris Harper, the director-producer duo behind Elliot Harper Productions, who also present Heisenberg: The Uncertainty Principle and The Lion The Witch And The Wardrobe in 2017. They will appear at the Wyndham’s Theatre and West Yorkshire Playhouse respectively.
Company, on the other hand, plays at the Gielgud Theatre from Wednesday 26th September 2018.
