This Christmas audiences can once again witness a stand-out panto at the London Palladium as it hands its stage over to the producers of 2016’s Cinderella for Dick Whittington, starring a whole host of big names in lead roles. When it comes to great pantomime this will be the show to beat as it plays over the festive season and into the New Year.
Dick Whittington is familiar to audiences across the UK thanks to its regular stagings during the panto season and it returns to the capital in 2017 with Charlie Stemp in the lead role. He stars alongside some familiar faces, including Julian Clarey as the Spirit of the Bells and Elaine Paige as Queen Rat.
And they’re not the only ones making their way to the stage of the London Palladium as they are joined by Ashley Banjo and the rest of Diversity alongside Nigel Havers, Paul Zerdin and Gary Wilmott. Together they perform under the direction of Michael Harrison.
The story has its origins in the Richard Whittington who lived in the 14th century (and went on to be the Lord Mayor of London) and became a figure of folklore over the generations, culminating in the pantomime that was first seen by audiences in the 19th century.
Over the years many big names have taken on the lead roles all over the country and its reputation has grown as a result. Now it lands in the capital during a Christmas season that sees various shows open for the younger crowds, including The Gruffalo’s Child at the Lyric Theatre.
Dick Whittington opens at the London Palladium on Wednesday 13th December 2017 (with previews from Saturday 9th December 2017).
