Audiences in the West End will be reintroduced to Christopher Marlowe’s classic tale this April as Kit Harington step out of the world of Game Of Thrones to play the title role in Doctor Faustus.
The well known television star has made a big impression on crowds around the world with his portrayal of Jon Snow in the most talked-about series of the decade, so this is a wonderful chance to see the man in action live onstage, adding to the plethora of talent that can be seen in the West End.
And part of this talent works behind the scenes as well as Jamie Lloyd directs the production, following up his many years of success in the West End, where he has been behind hits like The Hothouse and Macbeth as part of the Trafalgar Studios’ Trafalgar Transformed seasons.
This version of Marlowe’s masterpiece is revamped from his original text, with two new acts penned by Colin Teevan and a setting that adds the twist of celebrity culture to the proceedings. It will bring new depth to the tale and provide fans of the original with new material to enjoy at the Duke of York’s Theatre.
The eponymous Doctor Faustus (Harington) strikes a deal with the Devil as the story gets under way, setting in motion events that may lead to his undoing. As Faustus wishes for the powers of a conjuror his new gift brings him into the spotlight and grants him untold fame.
And with a performer like Harington in the role audiences can be assures of a stellar performance that will do justice to Marlowe’s character. As well as entertaining an international crowd in HBO’s Game Of Thrones, the actor has also had great success on the capital’s stages as well, perhaps most notably in the popular play War Horse at both the New London Theatre in the West End and at the National Theatre. However he also has film credits to his name, so audiences will inevitably recognise him from the likes of Spooks: The Greater Good, Pompeii and Silent Hill: Revelation, amongst others.
So this is bound to be a must-see production when it runs at the Duke of York’s Theatre, introducing the latest generation of theatregoers to a text that has stood the test of time, whilst also giving familiar fans something new; all of this whilst an acclaimed actor works under the direction of the acclaimed Jamie Lloyd.
Doctor Faustus is at the Duke of York’s Theatre from Thursday 21st April 2016 (previews from Saturday 9th April 2016).
