If you asked someone to name a well known American playwright there are a few names that spring to mind and one of them has to be David Mamet. After all, his work has had a profound effect for many decades, presenting an idiosyncratic style with memorable characters across numerous shows.

This success was cemented by the reaction to Glengarry Glen Ross, which earned a Pulitzer Prize amongst its many accolades over the decades.

It went from 1983 play, premiering at the National Theatre in London, to high profile film and in the process arguably became David Mamet’s best known play.

And now it returns to the West End, with Hollywood actor Christian Slater teaming up with My Family and Death In Paradise star Kris Marshall to bring life to some iconic characters.

Sam Yates directs a cast that also includes Stanley Townsend, Robert Glenister and Don Warrington, with Mamet’s script finding its latest voice on a London stage. This is one play should not be missed when it opens in October 2017.

Glengarry Glen Ross takes us to a Chicago estate agency, where we meet the ruthless team and management vying to sell land at any cost. With immoral characters, conflicted employees and foul-mouthed experts, it is a story that has struck a chord for many decades and continues to have a profound effect on audiences.

Slater plays the role of Ricky Roma on the stage, following in the footsteps of Al Pacino, who played the part on the big screen. Meanwhile, Kris Marshall plays John Williamson (played by Kevin Space in the film).

And on this occasion audiences will see the story play out through Sam Yates’ vision. The director has been behind a wealth of shows over recent years, including productions like Mixed Marriage at the Finborough Theatre and Murder Ballad at the Arts Theatre, amongst many others. His work has also been seen around the country at venues like the Sheffield Crucible and the Manchester Royal Exchange Theatre.

And in tackling the work of David Mamet in the West End his profile rises even further. After all, he will be working with a script by one of the most popular playwrights in America, whose work like American Buffalo and others have had great success on both sides of the Atlantic. American Buffalo, for example, was recently staged at the Wyndham’s Theatre back in 2015.

Glengarry Glen Ross runs at the Playhouse Theatre from Thursday 26th October 2017, following on from the brief appearance of Derren’s Brown’s Underground, which runs from September to October.
