Audiences will pick up theatre tickets and flock to the Old Vic Theatre in 2015 to revisit a musical classic in the form of High Society. Best known for the 1956 film version that starred Grace Kelly attempting to choose between suitors like Frank Sinatra and Bing Crosby, the Cole Porter musical makes its way back to London with a talented cast and with Maria Friedman, the Olivier Award-winning musical theatre performer, taking the reigns as director.
Friedman is well known to those that have seen some of the biggest musicals in town in the last two decades. She has appeared in well known hits like Chicago, The Witches Of Eastwick and The Woman In White, to name but a few, whilst also managing to pick up three Laurence Olivier Awards for Ragtime at the Piccadilly Theatre in 2003, Passion at the Queen’s Theatre in 1996 and By Special Arrangement at the Trafalgar Studios (then the Whitehall Theatre) in 1995.
But the woman famous for her performances onstage heads backstage when it come to High Society as she directs a show in which we meet a socialite of New York state, Tracy Lord, in the run up to her wedding. As the big day draws closer it becomes apparent that it is not just her fiancé that wants her hand in marriage – there’s also two more suitors to consider. One is her jazz-playing ex-husband, who arrives to try to win back her hand, and another is an undercover reporter who inadvertently falls for her whilst trying to pen a story on the wedding.
Audiences first experienced the tale told in High Society in the late 1930s in the form of the play The Philadelphia Story, which was adapted into the movie musical in 1956, following in the footsteps of other plays-turned-musicals like My Fair Lady (which started life as Pygmalion). The film starred Grace Kelly as Tracy Lord and she had to choose between Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and John Lund on the big screen, whilst many other performers have taken on the parts since the show made its way to the stage.
High Society lands in London in a year in which many high profile musicals are on offer, from Gypsy at the Savoy Theatre to Seven Brides For Seven Brothers at the Open Air Theatre.
It runs at the Old Vic Theatre in Lambeth from Thursday 14th May 2015 (previews from Thursday 30th April 2015).
