Year after year audiences are treated to stand-out revivals of the work of Alan Ayckbourn, including some of his most beloved shows like Absurd Personal Singular and The Norman Conquests. However, 2016 sees the arrival of How The Other Half Loves, a lesser known work, which plays at the Duke of York’s Theatre following its appearance at the Theatre Royal Haymarket.

How The Other Half Loves, which had its Theatreland premiere in 1970, returns to the capital under the direction of Alan Strachan and with Bill Kenwright producing. The high profile production will introduce a comic farce to modern audiences and give them a taste of some of Ayckbourn’s early work in the capital.

Though the show wasn’t his first to emerge (Ayckbourn had been around since the late 1950s), it was first staged at a time in which some of his best known was yet to make its mark. So audiences were yet to see future hits like A Chorus Of Disapproval or Absurd Person Singular when they sat down at the Lyric Theatre to witness How The Other Half Loves.

Those shows and others ensured his legacy as he picked up accolades like the Laurence Olivier Award in the 1980s as well as numerous Evening Standard Awards. He continues to write to this day, with recent plays including Neighbourhood Watch, Arrivals & Departures and Roundelay between 2011 and 2014.

With How The Other Half Loves we enter the world of three couples whose relationships are in for a rough time due to infidelity and falsely-accused betrayal. Bob and Fiona are having an affair and are trying to hide it from their partners, whose own actions have only made things more difficult. Meanwhile, the married couple the Featherstones have become embroiled in the situation too and could soon find themselves falsely accused of cheating as well. By the time the awkward dinner parties are staged there is already trouble brewing.

Having appeared in Scarborough in the late 1960s, the Lyric Theatre in 1970, and at the Theatre Royal Haymarket in early 2016, Alan Ayckbourn’s How The Other Half Loves now transfers to its next home. It opens at the Duke of York’s Theatre on Thursday 7th July 2016.
