The Trafalgar Studios 1 has welcomed some big names over the years, from James McAvoy in Macbeth to Ed Harris in Buried Child, and this has been matched around the West End with further top names joining high profile shows.
This tradition continues in 2018 as Tracy Letts’ popular play Killer Joe makes a triumphant return to the capital, with Pirates Of The Caribbean star Orlando Bloom taking on the title role. The result will be a memorable and captivating play as audiences are transported to Texas and introduced to a range of troubled characters making very poor decisions.
These characters and the dark story that wraps around them have earned the show many admirers over the years and they will be drawn to the show when Bloom brings the character of Joe to life in the West End, following in the footsteps of actors like Eric Winzenried and Matthew McConaughey.
So in bringing him to life he will be making his mark on a well known character, Joe Cooper, a hitman and police officer who is hired by Chris Smith and his father Ansel Smith to kill Ansel’s ex-wife Adele. It is part of a plan to get the insurance money and things will be simple as long as they have the money to pay. However, this gets complicated when the Smiths cannot provide the money upfront and it only goes downhill from there, with the news that they are not the recipients of the insurance money adding a new twist, as well as Joe’s decision to receive payment by his own means.
Whilst Orlando Bloom has previously appeared in the West End’s In Consideration, David Storey’s play set in 1960s Nottinghamshire, at the Duke of York’s Theatre, he is best known for his film work. He has appeared in a range of British films and Hollywood productions, with credits in the Pirates Of The Caribbean series, the Lord Of The Rings trilogy, its prequel Hobbit trilogy, Troy and The Three Musketeers, to name but a few.
So he is the latest in a long line of familiar faces taking to the stage of the Trafalgar Studios 1 when Killer Joe opens at the Whitehall venue on Friday 18th May 2018.
