Get ready for a unique show at the Wyndham’s Theatre this summer as Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar & Grill finally opens its doors at the West End venue. There is great anticipation for Audra McDonald’s appearance as the iconic performer Billie Holliday and audiences are clamouring for an opportunity to hear the numerous songs that make up the score.
It will be a stand-out show for the Wyndham’s Theatre, which has already welcomed some iconic stars in 2017 like former Doctor Who actor David Tennant in Don Juan In Soho. It means that this show has some great company as it opens its doors in the capital and unleashes another star in the form of Audra McDonald.
Billie Holiday was a popular jazz singer born in the first decades of the 20th century, who found success decades later between the 1930s and 1950s. She nurtured a huge legacy during that time, ensuring shows like this entertain her fans nearly 60 years since she died in 1959.
It is that stated year of 1959 in which this show takes place, catching Holliday as she performs one of her final gigs in Philadelphia only months before her death. Whilst on the stage she not only plays songs alongside her pianist, but also recounts stories from her life. It means that this is a play offers a gripping insight into her world, whilst also offering something in common with many of the capital’s jukebox musicals.
So with a legendary performer as the lead role it requires another talented performer to honour her career. With that in mind producers made the right decision in casting Audra McDonald in the part as she took the show on to great success on Broadway, earning the Tony Award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Play in 2014. It was the latest award in an enviable career, which has included credits in shows like Henry IV and Porgy & Bess on Broadway. Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar & Grill will be her West End debut.
So witness a unique show in the West End this summer as Lady Day At Emerson’s Bar & Grill runs at the Wyndham’s Theatre from Tuesday 27th June 2017 (previews from Saturday 17th June 2017).
