Over the years the Sadler’s Wells Theatre in North London has been at the forefront of dance, presenting some of the biggest names in the world at the venue in Islington (and at its West End outlet the Peacock Theatre), but 2017 sees the return of one of the biggest names of all.
Sir Matthew Bourne’s work makes the latest in a long line of appearances at the venue as he stages his classic take on Cinderella for all to see. Dance fans can rejoice as his unique spin on Prokofiev’s 1940s ballet returns, leaving a lasting impression on audiences as he always manages to do!
This iconic take involves the setting and time period, relocating the fairy tale action to London as the Blitz wages on, whilst a romance unfolds amongst the horrors of the Second World War. It was first seen by audiences back in 1997 and has since become a beloved part of Bourne’s body of work, ensuring plenty of attention for the show as it returns to Sadler’s Wells 20 years later.
Bourne has presented many shows here with his company New Adventures (who currently celebrate their 30th anniversary). As well as Cinderella, he has also reimagined the likes of Edward Scissorhands, Mary Poppins, Sleeping Beauty, Dorian Gray and, perhaps his most famous, Swan Lake. The results are there to be seen, with audiences flocking to see his work whenever it is staged in London.
So expect success once again in 2017 as the Sadler’s Wells Theatre, London’s home of international dance, welcomes Matthew Bourne’s Cinderella for performances from Saturday 9th December 2017.
