Following its run at the Theatre Royal Bath the popular musical adaptation of Mrs Henderson Presents now sets its sights on the West End as the production transfers to the Noël Coward Theatre in 2016.

Tracie Bennett will portray the title character of Laura Henderson in the performances, which begin in February. She takes on a part that was previously played by Judi Dench in the big screen version from 2005. Meanwhile, other cast members include Emma Williams and Ian Bartholomew, who work under the direction of Terry Johnson.

Johnson also penned the book of the musical, with George Fenton and Simon Chamberlain writing the music and Don Black putting together the lyrics.

Taking audiences back to 1937, Mrs Henderson Presents introduces us to the titular Laura Henderson, who brings entertainment to Great Windmill Street in the years prior to the Second World War. The eccentric widow buys a cinema on the street and turns it into the Windmill Theatre, then together with Vivian Van Damm she puts on variety shows to entertain the crowds. But as the war begins and the Blitz plunges London into darkness, they will have to up the ante if they wish to keep smiles on faces. As a result, they introduce The Windmill Girls, who are bound to make a big impression.

The original film on which the show is based appeared in cinemas a decade ago and in addition to Judi Dench it also starred Bob Hoskins and Kelly Reilly amongst its cast members. It was nominated for various awards at the time and clearly left a big enough impression for the musical theatre world to take notice.

So now they’ve recruited Tracie Bennett to tackle the lead role. The performer has previously appeared in various well known musicals like Blood Brothers, Les Misérables and Hairspray, amongst others. She is also recognisable for television work that includes New Tricks, Scott & Bailey, Casualty, Dalziel And Pascoe and The Bill, to name but a few.

And now she heads to the Noël Coward Theatre for Mrs Henderson Presents, which follows up shows like Photograph 51 and A Christmas Carol when it opens at the venue on Tuesday 16th February 2016 (previews from Tuesday 9th February 2016).
