The Trafalgar Studios 2 provides the West End home of Joel Drake Johnson’s acclaimed play Rasheeda Speaking, focusing on workplace racism and tensions, which escalate at the hands of two characters played by Tanya Moodie and Elizabeth Berrington.

An darkly comic American play, Rasheeda Speaking first appeared on the other side of the Atlantic, with an appearance in New York in 2014, and it cemented Joel Drake Johnson’s place at the top of his game. Now it makes its first appearance on these shores, taking audiences to a Chicago hospital and pitting two friends against one another.

Those friends go head to head thanks to the institutional racism of their boss, a white doctor. One of those friends and is black and the other white, with the latter forced to spy on the former, the doctor’s secretary, so that he can fire her.

A tension-filled look at an American workplace, Rasheeda Speaking has turned heads in the United States and has ensured that Joel Drake Johnson’s career-trajectory continues to climb. The playwright has also penned pieces that have appeared across the country, with shows like Four Places and A Blue Moon appearing in Chicago and The First Grade appearing in San Francisco, amongst a host of other shows.

For its UK premiere, Rasheeda Speaking is set to be directed by Jonathan O’Boyle and its cast of Tanya Moodie and Elizabeth Berrington ensures some memorable performances on the stage of the Trafalgar Studios. Moodie, for example, has previously appeared at the National Theatre and in productions for the Royal Shakespeare Company.

Rasheeda Speaking runs at the Trafalgar Studios 2 from Wednesday 18th April 2018.
