For the latest show headed to the Wyndham’s Theatre audiences will be treated to a production that re-teams some of its creative talents from its premiere production back in 2009.

Red will be directed by Michael Grandage when it heads to the West End and it will boast a performer in Alfred Molina when it opens in May 2018. Both reprise their work from the Donmar Warehouse production last decade and both will ensure a sizable audience for a must-see West End show.

John Logan’s story is one that has a historical basis within the art world, with Molina taking on the role of Mark Rothka, the artist who occupied a place in the abstract expressionist movement during the 20th century.

Much of the artist’s success occurred in the 1950s and this play catches up with him in the latter part of the decade in the period in which he was commissioned to paint murals for the Four Seasons hotel in New York. So in Red we join him and his assistant Ken (Alfred Enoch) as the latter questions his reasons for embarking upon the project, confronting his views on art and forcing him to consider the commercial side of his work.

Performer Alfred Molina is well known around the world, mostly for his screen work. He has appeared in a wealth of films during his career and has also embarked on challenging roles in London’s West End. This made him the perfect choice to portray Mark Rothko when Red first premiered at the Wyndham’s Theatre in 2009 and his return to the role in 2018 is highly anticipated. His other credits include Speed-The-Plow at the National Theatre and Art on Broadway.

Then there’s writer John Logan, who has also had success with stage and screen work. The acclaimed writer has a vital voice that ensures he is in high demand on both sides of the Atlantic.

And now his work plays at the Wyndham’s Theatre in London’s West End, opening at the West End venue on Friday 4th May 2018.
