Over the last century the work of Henrik Ibsen has resonated with audiences around the world as his plays have become engrained in modern culture and inspired countless writers to follow in the late playwright’s wake. With that in mind all eyes will be on the Duke of York’s Theatre from April 2019 as his classic play Rosmerholm heads to the West End, adapted by Duncan Macmillan and directed by Ian Rickson.
But that’s not all: Ibsen’s story of a country torn by political change and a new future will star Hayley Atwell in the role of Rebecca West and Tom Burke as Rosmer, providing audiences with familiar voices in the two lead parts.
Rosmersholm sees a country looking to change the way it operates by removing power from the ruling classes, but the story itself focuses on the mentioned Rosmer and Rebecca and the struggle that erupts between them, framing the turbulence gripping the community as a whole.
This adaptation is presented by Duncan Macmillan, whose previous work adapting the work of acclaimed playwrights has led to great success, as seen with the recent production of 1984 that ran in the West End and toured the UK (he co-adapted it with Robert Icke). His other credits include People Places And Things at the National Theatre and Every Brilliant Thing in Edinburgh and New York.
And with the stellar cast of Hayley Atwell and Tom Burke in the latest show to head to the capital, plus the acclaimed Ian Rickson directing, this is sure to be a much talked-about production when it runs in London’s West End.
Rosmersholm opens its doors at the Duke of York’s Theatre from Wednesday 24th April 2019.
