Audiences at the London Coliseum will be treated to this performance of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Sunset Boulevard this April as Glenn Close reprises the part of Norma Desmond for this unmissable show. A semi-staged performance, it will be a chance not only to revisit the classic story made famous by the Billy Wilder film, but also to witness the work of an enormously talented performer whose well known portrayal of Desmond in the 1990s earned her a Tony Award.
The original film was released in 1950 and saw Gloria Swanson and William Holden in the lead roles of Desmond and Joe Gillis. The story has taken on an iconic status since then and it continues to be revisited year after year.
Joe Gillis is a struggling screenwriter looking for a positive change in his fortunes when he happens upon the house of Norma Desmond. She is a faded star of the silent screen hoping for her big comeback and living in a fantasy world where she is still adored by all. She is putting together a film that will mark her return to the limelight and she soon recruits Gillis to put pen to paper. But the pair strike an eerie bond that begins a dark and tragic cycle.
Audiences picking up theatre tickets will be thrilled to witness Glenn Close as Desmond. AS well as appearing in well known films like Fatal Attraction and Dangerous Liaisons she has also made her mark on the stage with the likes of A Delicate Balance on Broadway, as well as Sunset Boulevard, also on Broadway, in the 1990s.
Sunset Boulevard runs at the London Coliseum from Monday 4th April 2016 (previews from Friday 1st April 2016).
