2018 marks the anniversary of many historic moments from the early 20th century, and whilst the end of the First World War will get a lot of attention, this new music and dance production at the Old Vic Theatre casts a spotlight on a pivotal moment in women’s rights.
In 1918 women in the UK gained the right to vote and this was the culmination of an epic struggle, led by the Suffragettes and, with them, Sylvia Pankhurst.
The iconic campaigner was at the forefront of British social movements in the early decades of the 20th century and Sylvia will delve not only into those struggles as she fought for various causes, but will also explore her home life, providing valuable insights into a historic figure.
But as this is a co-production with companies like the Old Vic, Sadler’s Wells and Zoonation: The Kate Prince Company, audiences can expect a myriad of forms coming together to tell this story, with dance and music utilised on the stage of the Old Vic to create something truly special. Penned by Kate Prince and Priya Parmar, the show also features music from DJ Walde and Josh Cohen.
It all comes to the Lambeth venue in an exciting year, with other shows like Mood Music, A Monster Calls and Fanny & Alexander also making their marks in 2018. Sylvia, therefore, has a great place in a top lineup.
The production runs at the Old Vic Theatre from Saturday 1st September 2018.
