The Audience is the latest opportunity that London theatre audiences will have to witness show in which the nation’s monarch is portrayed on a West End stage under the guidance of Peter Morgan, the screenwriter behind the hit movie The Queen.

But that’s not all. On this occasion audiences will get the chance to see the renowned Kristen Scott Thomas in the lead role, this time in a play that focuses on her relationship with different Prime Ministers over the years. Stephen Daldry is set to direct from Peter Morgan’s script as it returns in April 2015.

Kristen Scott Thomas is a well known actress whose work on the stage and screen has earned her widespread praise, awards and nominations. She is perhaps best known for her roles in films like The English Patient and Four Weddings And A Funeral, though she has also appeared in Mission: Impossible and French films like Tell No One. Meanwhile, 2014 saw her return to the stage when Electra began performances at the Old Vic Theatre in September, whilst previous stage work included The Seagull at the Royal Court Theatre and Old Times at the Harold Pinter Theatre.

For The Audience she will portray a British monarch that has met many famous political figures over the years as she has been on the throne during the tenure of many high profile British Prime Ministers. She famously conducts meetings with whoever is the current PM and the contents of said meetings are top secret – even spouses are reportedly kept in the dark – and this is where The Audience finds its artistic licence. Writer Peter Morgan imagines what goes on behind these closed doors as we explore the meetings with Prime Ministers from Winston Churchill to David Cameron.

In addition to that, the 2015 version updates the text to add new characters and reflects modern times.

Peter Morgan penned three movies that form what is known as the Tony Blair trilogy, which began with The Deal in the 1990s, continued with The Queen in the 2000s and concluded with The Special Relationship in recent years. All of the films featured Michael Sheen as then Prime Minister Tony Blair.

The Audience appears at the Apollo Theatre from Saturday 2nd May 2015 (previews from Tuesday 21st April 2015).
