The Prince of Wales Theatre has been the home of many high profile shows over the years, like “Mamma Mia!”, but now it is the home of another high profile and much-talked-about Broadway hit.
“The Book of Mormon”, the multiple-Tony Award-winning show from Trey Parker, Matt Stone and Robert Lopez, performs to the West End and in the process proves to those on this side of the Atlantic how it managed to turn many heads since it opened at the Eugene O’Neill Theatre in March 2011.
The plot of “The Book of Mormon” takes audiences to Northern Uganda where they are introduced to two young Mormon missionaries who hope to spread the message of the Church of Jesus of Latter-day Saints to the region. But there’s a huge problem as they are faced with a differing culture that is more interested in other things than religion. When their problems are related to AIDS and war, it seems that Mormonism is going to have to go to the back of the line.
Trey Parker and Matt Stone are best known for their work on the animated comedy show “South Park” (which also touched on the issue of Mormonism in the episode “All About Mormons”). They have also worked together on movies like “BASEketball”, “Orgazmo”, “South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut” and “Team America: World Police”, among others. As such those that head to the Prince of Wales Theatre to witness “The Book of Mormon” will have an idea as to the tone and humour that will be on display when they pick up theatre tickets.
It is also apt that they have teamed with Robert Lopez to put this together as his previous hit “Avenue Q” was often described as a cross between “South Park” and “Sesame Street”. The composer and lyricist has also worked for movies like “Winnie the Pooh” and for television as well.
Audiences will be able to witness the Broadway Smash hit musical “The Book of Mormon” when it opens at the Prince of Wales Theatre on Thursday 21st March 2013 (with previews beginning almost a month earlier on Monday 25th February 2013).
