The Wyndham’s Theatre is set to be the proud home of Florian Zeller’s drama The Father from September 2015, giving audiences in the West End the chance to see a show that has become a critically adored masterpiece during its appearances at other venues.
Though the show has previously been staged at the Tricycle Theatre in London, it is in the high profile setting of the West End that it will truly make its mark as audiences pick up theatre tickets and witness this emotional and memorable play, which is considered one of the best of recent memory.
The story focuses on the character of Andre, played by the acclaimed actor Kenneth Cranham, who is an 80-year old man with a history as a tap dancer. But Andre’s world is out of his control and whilst it seems as though he lives with his daughter Anne (Claire Skinner) and her husband, he might in fact have lived his life as an engineer and he does not live with his daughter at all.
The show comes from the pen of Florian Zeller, a French playwright and novelist with many celebrated works under his belt. When The Father, going by its French title of Le Pere was staged in France it picked up the Moliere Award, the French version of the Olivier Awards.
And to ensure continued success in the United Kingdom, a stellar cast has been assembled, including Claire Skinner in the role of Anne. The acclaimed actress has previously taken to the stage in West End productions like Deathtrap at the Noel Coward Theatre and The Glass Menagerie at the Comedy Theatre (now the Harold Pinter Theatre), as well as Blurred Lines at the National Theatre in 2014 and Mrs Affleck at the National Theatre in 2009. Audiences might also recognise her for her work in the television series Outnumbered.
As well as Skinner and the mentioned Kenneth Cranham, the cast also includes Rebecca Charles, whilst direction is handled by former Associate Director of the Royal Court Theatre James Macdonald.
The Father runs at the Wyndham’s Theatre from on Monday 5th October 2015 (with previews set to begin on Wednesday 30th September 2015). It follows on from The Mentalists, which runs during the summer.
