Audiences in the West End are once again treated to a fantastic production that has already wowed audiences at the Lyttelton National Theatre with its story set across 160 years, featuring generations of a single family and the chronicling the rise and fall of a banking empire.

The Lehman Trilogy, based on the Lehman Brothers, heads to the Piccadilly Theatre, with Simon Russell Beale amongst those taking on a lead role. The show was written by Stefano Massini and originally performed in Italian, but has since been adapted into English by Ben Power, who subsequently premiered it at the Lyttelton National Theatre.

And now West End audiences will get a look-in as director Sam Mendes brings the production to Theatreland and takes audiences on this century-spanning story.

That story begins in the mid-19th century as three brothers arrive in the United States from Bavaria, with dreams of making it big. They start with a simple store and as the money starts to gather they expand into other lucrative markets, including banking, so that an empire grows that will transcend the century. We catch up with the company in the hands of their nephews generations later and witness how it has changed through societal progression and new attitudes and eventually follow it to its demise at the hands of the 2008 financial crisis.

The show’s three performers take on an array of characters across the generations as the story unfolds across three acts, with Simon Russell Beale playing Henry and Philip Lehman at the National Theatre, in New York (where it plays prior to its Piccadilly run), and here in the West End.

The acclaimed performer has appeared in shows on the stage and screen, with credits like Mr Foote’s Other Leg at the Hampstead Theatre and Privates On Parade at the Noël Coward Theatre, amongst others.

With The Lehman Trilogy he stars alongside Ben Miles (well known for The Crown and Wolf Hall) and Adam Godley (a multi Olivier Award nominee), both of whom also starred in the production at its previous locations. Together they take audiences on a gripping journey though an American empire.

The Lehman Trilogy runs at the Piccadilly Theatre in London’s West End from Saturday 11th May 2019.
