Over the years the Theatre Royal Bath has presented an array of stand-out shows that have gone on to have further fortunes in the West End. Now, in 2017, it repeats this success with the English-language production of Daniel Kehlmann’s The Mentor, giving London theatregoers the opportunity to witness Scarface and Amadeus actor F. Murray Abraham perform live onstage.

The Mentor follows in the footsteps of shows like Mrs Henderson Presents and Hay Fever, two other productions that have made the journey from Bath to London’s West End in recent years, and demonstrates the Theatre Royal’s stature as it presents future West End hits. For The Mentor, however, they have an extra trick up their sleeve with the casting of F. Murray Abraham and with its status as the first time that London audiences will have the chance to see Daniel Kehlmann’s work (translated into English by Christopher Hampton).

The story focuses on Abraham’s character of Benjamin Robin and Daniel Weyman’s Martin, the former an old writer who coasts on the success he experienced many years earlier and the latter a rising star. Benjamin is bad-tempered, drunk and carrying a massive ego, so when he is forced to mentor the latest talent in Martin, whose own ego is being driven by his current success, two minds clash in a memorable and hilarious fashion.

Whilst audiences might not be familiar with Kehlmann’s work, it being staged in his native Germany prior to the UK, they will recognise the work of the other talents working behind the scenes, including writer Christopher Hampton and director Laurence Boswell. The latter has directed numerous celebrities in the West End during his career, including Jake Gyllenhaal in This Is Our Youth at the Garrick Theatre and Madonna in Up For Grabs at the Wyndham’s Theatre. His other credits include The Mother at the Tricycle Theatre and In The Next Room at the St James Theatre, amongst others.

In addition to the mentioned F. Murray Abraham and Daniel Weyman, the cast will also include Jonathan Cullen and Naomi Frederick in lead roles.

The Mentor runs at the Vaudeville Theatre from Tuesday 4th July 2017 (previews from Saturday 24th June 2017).
