Back in 2011 audiences gathered at the Lyric Theatre in Belfast to witness a classic pairing as Kenneth Branagh and Rob Brydon starred in The Painkiller under the direction of the show’s writer Sean Foley. The result was something that would be discussed for some time to come and as a result it was only a matter of time before West End audiences would get a look-in.
Fast forward to 2016 and this opportunity finally arrives at the Garrick Theatre, with Branagh, Brydon and Foley all returning to ensure this is a top notch show for those with theatre tickets. It appears as part of Branagh’s residency at the West End venue from 2015 to 2016 (which also sees shows like Harlequinade and The Entertainer appear) and is sure to be a stand-out part of the season.
The Painkiller is the story of two men who have led different lives and find themselves in adjoining hotel rooms for different reasons, but their current situations ensure that they fit together perfectly. One of them is Brian, a man down on his luck as both his social and professional lives are defunct and his marriage has recently ended, so as he spends time in his hotel room it is suicide that is on his mind. Ralph, on the other hand, is a killer, and during the course of the play we will see how these two worlds combine.
Writer Sean Foley, who also directs, has enjoyed a successful career as the recipient of numerous awards and nominations related to his various play. As a playwright and director he has been behind a wealth of recent West End success stories, with two of his shows earning Laurence Olivier Awards (Do You Come Here Often at the Vaudeville Theatre and The Play What I Wrote at the Wyndham’s Theatre) and many more earning nominations. His other credits include Jeeves And Wooster In Perfect Nonsense at the Duke of York’s Theatre.
This is an unmissable treat at the Garrick Theatre and when it stands alongside the likes of Romeo & Juliet and The Winter’s Tale, among others, it is sure to be a hit.
The Painkiller runs at the Garrick Theatre from Saturday 5th March 2016.
