What if we could make Shakespeare funny? Well you’re in for a treat as David Mitchell is starring in a stage adaptation of the popular BBC sitcom Upstart Crow at the Gielgud Theatre this year.

Ben Elton will be bringing his critically acclaimed BBC sitcom to its even more natural home of the big stage in London’s West End. Elton has long been a multifaceted talent - the creator of Blackadder is a comedic genius, a writer, playwright, and musical librettist and this year, he and David Mitchell unite their comedic talents.

‘Tis 1605, in Shakespearean England.

Audiences will be delighted to watch William Shakespeare in his wrestle with inspiration and motivation to pen a new story. But that’s not all, his king and country are depending on him to uphold his reputation as England’s greatest playwright.

David Mitchell is best known for his comedy, with television credits that include the ever-popular Peep Show and Would I Lie To You? This means he’ll be sure to put his signature comedic spin on one of the most famous playwrights in British history.

Mitchell has been enthusiastic about his West End debut, saying that “theatre goers can look forward to a comedy steeped in authentic Shakespearean ambience in every way apart from the smell.”

Game of Thrones star, Gemma Whelan will play the role of Kate, having also previously starred in One Man, Two Guvnors at the National Theatre. The play will be directed by Sean Foley, with the original script written entirely by Ben Elton.

Upstart Crow is at the Gielgud Theatre from 7th February to 25th April, 2020.
