Theatregoers in the West End regularly flock to jukebox musical celebrating music icons – just look at the success of Thriller Live at the Lyric Theatre – and this ensures a sizable audience for any new production.
With that in mind all eyes are on Tina, directed by Phyllida Lloyd and playing at the Aldwych Theatre from March 2018. This is a celebration of one of the biggest names in music – Tina Turner – and not only chronicles her life story but also provides some heart pounding renditions of her popular hits. For Turner fans, this will not be a show that they will want to miss.
After all, this is an opportunity to witness a fantastic new musical in one of the world capitals of musicals – London’s West End – and with an impressive creative team bringing it all together this will be one of the theatrical events of the year.
Director Phyllida Lloyd, after all, is behind the successful musical Mamma Mia! that still plays at the Novello Theatre. She has also led countless shows at other prestigious venues in the capital, whilst also directing for the big screen (she directed the Mamma Mia! film and also the Margaret Thatcher biopic The Iron Lady).
And with Tina she will present a show that follows Turner’s life and career, beginning with her early years and progressing through to the rise of her stardom. It will cover the beginnings of her career and then continues until she reaches absolute success at the top of her game in the 1970s and 1980s.
And along the way we will also witness some fantastic performances of her hit songs, so expect talented performers to belt out fan favourites.
During her time at the top Turner has released an array of albums, with Tina Turns The Country On emerging in 1974. It was followed by the likes of Love Explosion in 1979, Break Every Rule in 1986, What’s Love Got To Do With It in 1993, Wildest Dreams in 1996 and Twenty Four Seven in 1999, amongst others.
Add to those credits a range of film and television roles, plus contributions to film soundtracks as well, and you have the make-up of a hugely influential performer whose work has had a profound effect on popular culture.
So make sure you catch Tina as this fantastic new jukebox musical runs at the Aldywch Theatre from Tuesday 17th April 2018 (with previews from Wednesday 21st March 2018).
