The Vaudeville Theatre in London’s West End becomes the latest home of a play that has travelled around the world to appear on some of the most famous international stages in its near 40-year history.
True West, by Sam Shepard, first emerged on the other side of the Atlantic in 1980 and it has enjoyed a long history since, even getting close to winning a Pulitzer Prize for Drama. In that time some big names have taken on its lead roles and this tradition continues in 2018 as Kit Harrington of Games Of Thrones fame, plus Johnny Flynn, a well known musician and performer, heads to the Vaudeville Theatre.
Harrington and Flynn play Austin and Lee, two brothers who have very different lives and outlooks that have led them to different places. The show takes place in California, where Austin is a screenwriter that has landed a deal with the high profile producer Saul Kimmer and Lee re-enters his life well aware of his brother’s lucrative career.
Lee makes his money robbing from people’s houses and he has his own proposal for Austin, whose reactions to his brother could be his own undoing.
First seen in San Francisco in 1980, True West has since been staged on Broadway and in London, with its first run in the capital taking place at the National Theatre in 1981. It has since returned at many locations in the UK, like the Tricycle Theatre, the Donmar Warehouse and the Bristol Old Vic, amongst others.
But with this production at the Vaudeville Theatre, theatregoers will see the familiar faces of Kit Harrington and Johnny Flynn. If audiences haven’t seen Game Of Thrones, they might still recognise Harrington from films like Brimstone and stage productions like Doctor Faustus at the Duke of York’s Theatre, The Vote at the Donmar Warehouse, Posh at the Royal Court Theatre and War Horse at the New London Theatre.
He can be seen in True West when the Oscar Wilde season ends at the Vaudeville Theatre late in 2018 (consisting of shows like An Ideal Husband and The Importance Of Being Earnest). It begins performances on Friday 23rd November 2018.
