Venus In Fur makes a triumphant appearance at the Theatre Royal Haymarket, giving London theatre audiences the chance to witness a powerful evening of theatre in more ways than one. As a writer-director and a potential performer for his lead role run the lines during auditions we are there to observe an insightful and compelling story unfold.
The show features only two performers on the stage and for this staging they will be David Oakes and Natalie Dormer, two actors with a wealth of theatre credits to their names, making them instantly recognisable to those in attendance. Meanwhile, directing duties fall upon Patrick Marber, whose Don Juan In Soho played at the Wyndham’s Theatre in 2017.
With Venus In Fur he directs a show that contains a play within a play as we meet the character of Thomas Novachek (Oakes) after disastrous auditions for the lead part in his latest play. He has little hope left when Vanda Jordan enters vying for her own chance to shine. There are problems with this, however, not just related to her unannounced entry into the proceedings, but also due to her unsuitability for the role. Novachek relents, however, and the duo spends the evening reading the lines, disappearing into the roles as something profound unfolds on the stage.
The show was first seen by audiences back in 2010 and has been seen worldwide in the time since, with this West End version hotly anticipated thanks the acclaim it has earned wherever it has been staged. But then audiences have come to expect no less from writer David Ives, whose work has earned him awards and recognition for decades. Not only did Venus In Fur receive recognition from the Tony Awards, his previous work has also been highlighted, with In The Timing receiving particular success in the 1990s.
Meanwhile, performers David Oakes and Natalie Dormer have also earned great success, with Oakes previously starring in Shakespeare In Love at the Noël Coward Theatre and Dormer appearing in After Miss Julie at the Young Vic Theatre.
Venus In Fur runs at the Theatre Royal Haymarket from Tuesday 17th October 2017 (previews from Friday 6th October 2017).
