Audiences headed to the Playhouse Theatre from late-December 2014 will be treated to a stand-out comedy as Tamsin Greig makes her musical theatre debut in Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown. The show was first seen by audiences on Broadway in 2010 and it provided a humorous looks at a woman’s exploits following a recent split, with Bartlett Sher directing from a script based on the renowned 1988 film of the same name.
The original film was directed by the acclaimed Pedro Almodóvar with this musical production adding to the proceeding with music and lyrics by David Yazbek and a book by Jeffrey Lane.
The story takes audiences to Madrid, where they meet the character of Pepa (Greig), who has recently been dumped by her lover. It leads to a highly eventful two days as she and her friends experience passionate and memorable moments alongside heartbreak. As Pepa’s lover has left her, she goes about finding out the reasons why, leading to her crossing paths with the man’s wife and child, plus his latest lover.
Along the way we hear musical numbers such as Time Stood Still, Tangled, Mother’s Day, My Crazy Heart and Model Behaviour, to name but a few.
Tamsin Greig, of course, needs little introduction following many years in the spotlight both as a television star and theatre actress. For television her work has famously consisted of comedy, which has included appearances in some of the best known shows of the last decade, from Black Books (alongside Bill Bailey and Dylan Moran) to Green Wing (alongside Stephen Mangan), Friday Night Dinner (alongside Simon Bird) and Episodes (alongside Mangan and Matt LeBlanc). In terms of theatre roles, she earned a Laurence Olivier Award for Much Ado About Nothing with the Royal Shakespeare Company, followed by a further nomination for The Little Dog Laughed at the Garrick Theatre.
With Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown, of course, she is in new territory with musical theatre. However, there is little doubt that she will make a big impression with audiences in the capital.
In a year that also brings the return of famous musicals like Cats and Evita, Women On The Verge Of A Nervous Breakdown begins previews at the Playhouse Theatre on Saturday 20th December 2014, with its official opening taking place in the New Year on Monday 12th January 2015.
